the product of two consecutive even numbers is 360. find the numbers

OpenStudy (jamesj):

if n is an even number, then the next even number is n + 2. The problem now says that n(n+2) = 360 Now solve for n.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got that...

OpenStudy (jamesj):

So this is a quadratic in n: n^2 + 2n - 360 = 0. Solve.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do i use the quadratic formula or what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

best to use the quadratic formula

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you should get 18 and 20 :-D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yapp i got that!! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and how you solve this quadratic equation? by finding two numbers whose product is 360 and are two apart! so really you could just guess and check, because that is what you are going to do in any case
