define genetic engineering in plants?

OpenStudy (blues):

Genetic engineering in anything is when the genome, the genetic material which is transmitted from one generation to the next, is modified or 'engineered' to have some desirable quality. For example, genetic engineering in plants would be addition of genes to the plant's original DNA which provide drought resistance, for example, or removal of genes which make the plant susceptible to a certain type of virus or bacterial infection.
