1. The setting of the novel mirrors the characters descent into what Golding calls "Mankind's Essential Illness." The setting becomes darker as the novel progresses. 2. Things "break up" in the absence of social control and ethics again relating to Golding's main theme that we are born evil and we need society in order to control this evil.
