What was the first country to successfully settle land that would become Canada?

France was the first to colonize the Canadian region, though there are some records that indicate that perhaps scandanavian vikings had colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland.

When the Spanish discovered the America's, many countries were jealous of their riches from the Americas. This caused an explosion in exploration to the unknown land, countries like Portugal, France, and the U.K. all set sails to find the riches in the Americas. As you know, France found "Canada" which the French called "New France". The first settlers were fur traders that would hunt and kill animals in New France and sell them, that what the only resource there that was actually profitable.
