when do you and when do you not use FOIL for radical equations? look at this video where the guy uses FOIL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LY8VBsLf-4M and for equations like √x+8=√3x+8 you would not use FOIL why is this?

FOIL is used when two brackets should be multiplied with each other. This is not the case here. You would only need subtraction and division.
