An element is a type of atom, in as much as it has the same number of protons. Hydrogen is an element. All hydrogen atoms have 1 proton. The number of protons is the atomic number. Hydrogen therefore has atomic number 1. Helium is another element. All helium atoms have 2 protons; that is, atomic number 2. The oxygen you need to breathe and lives; they all have 8 protons, atomic number 8. A group of atoms that all have the same number protons is an example of an element.
