Also, the name gives it away: carbon dioxide - carbon - and oxide = oxygen. The di means two. Carbon dioxide is \( CO_2 \). One atom of carbon, two atoms of oxygen.

If for example you have a compound called sulfur dioxide, then it is made of -- you guess it -- sulfur and oxygen.
