How do you determine if a polynomial is the difference of two squares?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it looks like \[a^2-b^2\]

OpenStudy (turingtest):

difference of squares has the form \[x^2-y^2\]in general if you see two variables of this form you can write this as\[(x+y)(x-y)\]if one figure contains (a) variable(s) and the other is a constant C you can convert it from it's original form to one like that above in this way\[x^2-C \to(x-\sqrt C)(x+\sqrt C)\]

Thank you Turning for explaning in detail this helps a lot.
