TAGGING Questions =========== Question-askers should be able to tag their questions with pre-defined labels like "algebra" , "trigonometry", "calculus" etc. Question-answerers should also be able to tag posts with appropriate labels. Moderators can do all of the above and REMOVE tags if they are inappropriate.
yeah it's good idea already brought up in feedback section look at left :D but i don't think that answerers should tag posts, only askers
it seems you know about red feedback :D
> i don't think that answerers should tag posts, only askers Why? It seems many students would probably not be able to accurately tag their own posts so I think it is reasonable for more experienced and knowledgeable to do so. Of course, like anything else, this opens itself up to abuse -- improper tagging, Since the same argument applies to comments, (anyone can comment on anything, appropriately or not) I am not worried, since most of OpenStudy Math seems to be manage with its open-comment policy. :)
then we can make that only x+ lvl can do it, 0 < x <= 100 :D
We actually had a short interim where we tested this, with being able to tag multiple groups. End result was people just spammed tags so their question might get more visibility. We didn't find that interaction worked well, and use of the site decreased significantly, so we bailed on it.
but i think mathteacher asked for tag's as something within same group, not the others
Shadow -- thank you for your reply. To be clear, my request was for individual questions to be tagged BY TOPIC. ====== Example ====== QUESTION What is the equation of a line that goes through the points (1,1) and (-4,6) in slope intercept form? TAGS algebra, slope intercept form, equation of a line
Yeah, absolutely. The biggest problem is in our experience people haven't really used these effectively. The previous version of OpenStudy also had tags, and their use was fairly limited. We don't want to complicate the UI if it isn't going to make things easier for many people.
Hi Shadowfield, >We don't want to complicate the UI if it isn't going to make things easier for many people. Fair point, but check out the NUMBER ONE request in the red feedback area. :) "Search for questions to see if my problem has already been solved" 120 (the number two request has 74 votes) The ability to tag and click tags to search would probably address that nicely. I'm sure you've seen the "overflow" series of website: http://math.stackexchange.com/ something like that would be super-duper.
i agree that would be great but i am afraid he's right about tags, most of new users wouldn't understand it properly, but solution might be allow to post question without tag
Yeah, Stack Exchange is a decent model, but their volume and user quality is different. Basically, tags work if your community is at the right level to use them properly. I think because we have a lot of younger students rather than older users, it would be overwhelming to try and maintain tags for the volume of questions that appear in, say, math, and the posters themselves are typically not very good at tagging their questions at all. We could require them to tag their questions, but in our experience that has yielded useless tagging (e.g., in math people would tag the question math).
Still, we haven't discarded the issue altogether. We're constantly evaluating if and how we can bring tags into the mix. We do think there's a problem that needs solving there, we're just not certain user tags are the proper solution.
