how do you find the square root of a number without using a calculator?

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

in which level of math do u need help?

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

btw, we use price factorization.

Unless it is a perfect square which is trivial, using an iterative method is best. e.g. if you want the square root of y then do: x_n+1 = 0.5 * (x_n + y/x_n) Do this as many times as you want for arbitrary precision.

idk what level of math it is.. it is for the ACT..and what is price factorization

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

here is an example of some methods: http://www.homeschoolmath.net/teaching/square-root-algorithm.php
