Why is the sea salty?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

As we all know, the water of the oceans comes from rivers and lakes. As the river water runs into the ocean, it takes along with it some mineral salts from rocks. These salts get accumulated in the oceans and seas and so the sea water is salty.

the more interesting question is: why are the rivers NOT salty? at least not saltier than the seas. this come because of the permanent vaporescence of sea water through the sun: the water evaporates, but the salt doesn't. over millions of years, thus the salt concentration has reached its current value of 3.5%.
