well for instance \[\pi\] or the square root of 2 are not rational because they cannot be expressed as a fraction of two integers. Numbers like one half, or three fourths or any whole number for instance two are rational because they can be expressed as \[\frac{1}{2}, \frac{3}{4}, \frac{2}{1}\]
