Q:Explain the elements that the author uses to engage the reader in a piece of writing.
Well usually, the author uses words.
Wow v.v
Unless they use drawings and music, in which case they are most likely not authors, but artists and musicians. :) (Serious now) what do you mean with your first question, are you asking about a specific piece of work? Because you can't really generalize about all authors, as many different authors use many different strategies and tactics to engage a reader. In general, by making three dimensional, believable characters, they try to get you to develop sympathies and emotions towards the characters. Sometimes they will use elements such as humor, tragedy, irony, poignancy, etc to stimulate the reader's mind and emotions, which is what gets people invested in a story.
hmmm....id say the point of view is something important. also the language and the vocabulary. the intro is also something important because it kind of gives the reader a first impression of what theyre going to be reading. Authors create characters that readers find interesting. They put these characters into interesting situations which is what keeps the reader glued to the piece of literature.
