Fuel oil usually is sold by the gallon, gas for cooking by the cubic foot, and coal by the ton. What are the advantages of selling the first two by volume and the last by mass? PLEASE HELP!! (:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Coal is not a fluid like the other ones.

OpenStudy (espex):

The first two have a relatively low mass to volume ratio.

eSpeX - I'm pretty sure that if you had a high mass to volume ratio you'd want to measure by volume as opposed to mass.

OpenStudy (espex):

yakeyglee: True, however the question has to do with items "sold" by volume over mass, a gas has a great volume compared to its mass so to sell it by mass would not be good business. Fuel oil falls into the same category as gas.

Interesting argument...true true.
