how do you subtract improper fractions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

common denominatory first then do the subtraction

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i let them equal some arbitrary number and let the math work itself out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It has been to long since I did these this is my problem 5 1/10 and 3 1/5

OpenStudy (amistre64):

realize that improper fractions are addition of a fraction to a whole number

OpenStudy (amistre64):

5 + 1/10 - (3 + 1/5) 5 + 1/10 - 3 - 1/5 2 + 1/10 - 1/5 is a good start

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):
