x^4-5x^2-36=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Need help solving

OpenStudy (kinggeorge):

Since 4x(-9)=36, and 4-9 = -5 \[(x^2 -9)(x^2+4) = x^4 -5x^2-36\] so \[x^2 -9 = 0\rightarrow x=\pm \sqrt(9) = \pm 3\] or \[x^2+4=0 \rightarrow x=\pm \sqrt(-4) = \pm 2i\] If you want only real solutions ignore the last line.

OpenStudy (kinggeorge):

That should be 4x(-9)=-36 at the top

Thank You:), I understand it
