Exercise 3. A car travels the first half of a 120 mile trip at 30 miles per hour. At what speed would the next 60 miles need to be for the overall average speed of the entire trip to be 65 miles per hour?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

120 mi / 30 mph = 4 hours

OpenStudy (anonymous):

180 total miles / (4 + x hrs) = 65 mph

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hm.. how do i solve that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the solution is negative

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

No. It's 60 mi / 30 mph = 2 hours 120 / (2 +x) = 65

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i misread the problem

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

Although, I still get negative results. Hmmm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it looks like a badly made problem to me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm, ok. thanks.
