In the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, the character Brutus fits the definition of the tragic hero. Brutus's tragic flaw was that he was too trusting, also he had an issue with hubris, alongside a lust for power. Brutus could not have predicted what Caesar would have done with the crown, therefore did know that if Caesar was crowned if he would turn like a serpents egg. Cassius shows some of the characteristics of being a tragic hero as well. Brutus was very trusting to everyone in the play. He trusted Antony not to blame the conspirators Caesar's funeral. Antony broke that promise and turned the people against them. Brutus also trusted Cassius on several occasions in the play. Cassius knew Brutus had excessive pride and that is what he used to get Brutus to join in the conspiracy. Brutus felt that he had had to kill Caesar in order to save Rome from tyranny. He took all power away from Cassius causing him to no longer have any say in the happenings of the group. Cassius showed similar characteristics of a tragic hero with Brutus. Both of these characters were noble men. He, unlike Brutus, does not show contrition about his slaughter of Julius Caesar. Until the day that he died, Cassius believed that his actions were right to do. He ordered his servant to help him kill himself. Though the conspirators killed Caesar, Brutus believed he had a valid excuse which he had the people believe. He thought that killing Caesar was the right thing to do, even though it was not. He had a lust for power, and he died at the end of the play. In the end Cassius and Brutus were both dead.
