What is one fourth of a number plus 8? How do I write an algebraic expression for this?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Let x = a number So "one fourth of a number" is \[\Large \frac{1}{4}x\], ie one fourth times x and "one fourth of a number plus 8" translates to \[\Large \frac{1}{4}x+8\],

Thanks, that's what I coudn't remember. I haven't taken algebra on over 20 years lol just trying to help my daughter. She thought "of" meant she had to divide. The first image that came into my mind was multiplication. you confirmed it. Thanks again.
