Probability.Uyens birthday is coming soon. her parents have a 1/5 chance of purchasing her diamonds, 2/5 chance of purchasing her pearls, and a 2/5 chance of purchasing her rubies. however the chance of her parents losing her present before her birthday is 3/5 for diamonds, 1/5 for pears and 1/5 for rubies. calculate the probability of her actually recieving a gift.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

So, we can figure out the probability of her getting diamonds—we multiply the probability of her parents getting one with the probability of them still having it (which means the opposite of the probability of them losing it). That's (1/5) * (2/5) = 2 in 25 chance. You can do the same with the others and then add the probabilities together to get the overall probability of her receiving a gift.
