Help?! Simplifying complex fraction! I just cant get it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

[y-((3y-7)/7)]/(8/35)+(2/5y)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Every attempt I make is wrong :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i got 5y/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now i'm going to tell you how i got it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer is 5y/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

waaaaaaait

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i forgot the 2/5y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

imma noob

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i messed up somewhere in adding, but what you're supposed to do is solve each fraction half individually. so you have y- 3y-7/7 --------- 8/35 + 2/5y remember how to add rational expressions? Find a common denominator. Start at 8/35 + 2/5y, to make them alike, you could multiply 2/5y by 7 to get 14/35y. For 8/35, you could mulitply by y to get 8y/35y. So now that they're alike, you can just add across 14+8y/35y is now in the denominator. Now, lets look at the numerator It's the same thing, remember how to subtract rational expressions? we can multiply y by 7 to get a common denomiator. Also, remember to turn the minus sign into a plus sign and make everything in the numerator the oppostite of what they are. y/7 + -3y+7/7 now just add accross. you get -2y+7/7 you can cancel out the 7's now you're just left with -2y ok, so back to your original problem where you now have -2y --------- 14+8y/35 this is just saying to divide. Remember how to divide raitonal expressions? -2y divided by 14+8y/35 you will multiply by the recipocal, remember? -2y multiplied by 35/14+8y remember -2y is just -2y/1 in fraction form. Now multiply this rational expression...... WAIT I DID THIS WRONG DIDIN'T I??????????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 5/4y damn it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pellet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got -5/8y now that i redid it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i suck i should'nt confuse you anymore

OpenStudy (anonymous):

don't give up on me i will do it again with 100 percent focus

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, it wasn't supposed to be -2y, it was supposed to be 4y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i messed up again i got 35y/2y+14 pellet@!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry i keep on messing up too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me just get on outta here because i tried it once again but i messed up, again lol sorry i couldn't be much help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer is 5y/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you get that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because now i want to know too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

[y-((3y-7)/7)]/(8/35)+(2/5y) =((7y-3y+7)/7)/((8y+14)/35y) =((4y+7)/7)*(35y/(8y+14)) =(5y*(4y+7))/(2*(4y+7)) =5y/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whoa what did you do in =(5y*(4y+7))/(2*(4y+7))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

get back in here tuki

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when you're cross simplifying, 4y+7 35y ----- * ----- 7 8y+14 don't you simplify 4y and 8y by 4y and get 2? then simplify 7 and 14 by 7 and get 2. 1 35y ---- * ----- 7 2+2 then cross simplify 35y and 7 by 7 and get 5y 5y --- 4 ??? why is it 5y/2
