New question? can anyone help!

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

You need to type your question first. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It takes a freight train 5 hours longer to travel 240 miles than it takes a express train to travel 150 miles . the rate of the express train is 20 miles per hour greater than the rate of the freight train . Find the rate of the express train?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you help?

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Here's a start: \[D = R\cdot T\] or , distance equals rate times time. Distance is in miles rate is in miles per hour time is in hours

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok help me finish it off lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

??????

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

r*t = 240 (r+20)(t-5) = 150 solve the system of equations with substitution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need help solving it someone please help me!

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

t = 240/r plug it into other equation (r+20)((240/r)-5) = 150 Multiply it out and solve for r

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Mary, are you sure you wrote the problem down correctly? Would you please check?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah its written write im so confused though can soneone be more specific and find the answer so i can then find out hoe you got it?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Can you multiply those two binomials the dumbcow gave you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no not really i dont understand it at all

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Can you multiply (x-2)(x+6)?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

The answer is 50

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How did you get 50 can you show step by step work please !

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Not until you answer my question.

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

well easy way to get rid of "r" in denominator is to multiply both sides by r -> (r+20)(240-5r) = 150r -> -5r^2 +240r -100r +4800 = 150r

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i can do that

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Then multiply the two binomials that dumbcow gave you in the same way and post what you get. Maybe you could use the "Draw" option.

???????
