Actually AC is the right choice because of the problem of electric energy transmission from generators all the way to cities and homes. You cannot transmit at low voltage to satisfy a large power demand (for a city, say). If you do, you will lose all the power along the way (actually within a few feet of wire!) if the metal conductors don't vaporize first form the immense heat generated! But if you transmit at high voltage with DC, how do you use it at your home? Imagine getting a Mega Volt from your wall outlet!! The reason AC is the choice is because we can bring the voltage down using step-down transformers.

May be now new and efficient techniques are emerging to convert between high and low DC voltage...But personally, for long distance transmission, my money is still on AC; sorry Edison!
