OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

There is 3,000,000,000 base pairs and it needs to be replicated. The enzyme can replicate 60 base pairs/sec. If replication is finished in 20 mins (1200sec), how many origin of replications are there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

origin of replications means how many times replication occur??

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dunno but i m getin ans dat 4166 approx can be divided if proces goes like dis

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

I got 41666.67 origins of replication 3X10^9 bp/ [(60 bp/sec) * # of origin of replication = 1200 sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

evn i too :)

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

Are you in college?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope high school nd u??

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

I graduated from College with a B.S in biology Im going for my B.A in chemistry Your pretty smart for a high schooler

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow!!!! congo.. to u...r u gud in human physiology?? need help in dat topik

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

I got an A in Animal Physiology....... should be the same as humans....in some aspect.... Like I know how urine is filtrated, contraction of muscles, etc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cool wats d time up der r u on fb??

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

Im on facebook now....... we can talk there......

The rate of replication is slow, so it must be eukaryotic system. Every origin gives two replication fork. you need to divide your answer by two. i.e. 20833.3 aprrox to 20834

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep, adeshshendge is right. I would draw the conclusion that you have got a prokaryotic system, no eukaryotic. I guess he already meant that. =) remember: circular DNA --> 2 replication forks per ori!
