How is the overall level of a user calculated?

There should be no overall level, really. I mean, there's a concept somewhere in the code, but we're not using it at the moment.

If you mean in any given group, yes, it's a function of XP. You get XP from medals and achievements for now, and we'll be adding more ways to get XP soon.

Just saw below that we're showing the overall level on profile pages; our mistake! The overall level is calculated just like the level for groups, it just adds up the XP for all your groups. But it's not something we've really thought out all the way through, thus why we avoid listing it if we can.

But then, it should be the sum of all the levels right? So I should be around level 70(overall level) but it shows 51.

No, it's not the same. It's the sum of all of your XP, which then translates to a level. Because different XP ranges correspond to different levels, this is not necessarily the same as the sum of your levels (indeed, it is likely not to be).
