Because the internet has become the prime way of sharing information. For example, sites like Hulu with tv shows and movies online get insane numbers of viewers. Online news sites get hundreds of thousands of views and comments. An internet ad also has advantages over a tv ad - let's say, Obama or Romney or whoever wants to campaign, and they do it online, they can include links to more information, a link to donate, to share with your friends etc.
