A man invests a portion of $9,000 at 3% and the rest at 4%. If his total return from the two investments is $295, how much income did he receive from the money invested at 4%? Please show me the steps.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

put x = amount invested at 4% then since the total is $9,000 the amount invested at 3% must be 9,000 - x then solve \[.04x+.03(9,000-x)=295\] for x

thanks

might want to clear the decimals and write \[4x+3(9,000-x)=29500\] to make it easier
