That's a - before the parenthesis, so you multiply all the terms with -1: 5x^4 + 3x + (-1 * 5x4) + (-1 * 3x) 5x^4 + 3x + (-5x^4) + (-3x) now, you multiply the +1 in each of the terms with the parenthesis 5x^4 + 3x - 5x^4 - 3x Group the similar terms: 5x^4 - 5x^4 + 3x - 3x 0 + 0 = 0
