Solve |2y - 2| = 15

myininaya (myininaya):

2y-2=15 or 2y-2=-15 solve both for y

OpenStudy (lilg132):

8.5

OpenStudy (lilg132):

i thought you cant have an abosolute value that = to a negative number?

myininaya (myininaya):

we have |something|=positive

myininaya (myininaya):

not |something|=negative

OpenStudy (lilg132):

but you wrote or 2y-2=-15 ?

myininaya (myininaya):

\[2y=17 => y=\frac{17}{2}\] \[2y=-13 => y=\frac{-13}{2}\] i wrote that because we have|something|=positive gives us two cases

OpenStudy (lilg132):

oh ok but if it is |something| = negative then we have no soloution right?

myininaya (myininaya):

right!

OpenStudy (lilg132):

thanks for that was abit confused

myininaya (myininaya):

tomas yes you can probably have several i know for a fact you can have two i don't think there is a limit

myininaya (myininaya):

|f(x)|>=0 so thats why |f(x)| can not have negative output

OpenStudy (lilg132):

ok thanks :)
