i did one in my software engineering class...i built a software for a bookstore (a fake bookstore..=P) it was mainly for inventory...you can add, update, search and other functions that are necessary for a book store inventory system...you can have like a database for the inventory..hope this helps..=) Good Luck

You should consider Pattern Matching, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, etc etc. You can develop very good projects in these fields.

I recommend maybe some module for an API or framework ...
For example I use something called GridGain which still lacks a plugin for supporting Javasrcipt/browser integration (yes I know java and javascript are not the same!!!!!!!!), and no applets are not the solution (as far as my sandbox knowledge goes at least). Or Android integration. These are ideas that are useful but websites for specific ideas have no idea.
