The z value is actually how many standard deviations(stdev) you are from the mean. Say if z=1, you are 1 stdev from the mean, if z=2.65 you are 2.65 stdev from the mean. At the mean, your z-score is 0 and the area under the curve is 0.5. To find the area between that and 0.35 stdev from the mean, look up the value you get for z=0.35 and subtract 0.5 from it.
