OpenStudy (cathyangs):

What are myopathy and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?

OpenStudy (blues):

Myopathies are pathological conditions affecting myocytes or muscle cells. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the muscle cells which make up the layer of muscle around the heart - the myocardium - are enlarged. It is sort of an umbrella term which is applied to all conditions in which this occurs, regardless of why or how it came to be. As the individual cells get bigger, the myocardium also increases in width and intrudes upon the sizes of all chambers but especially the ventricles in the heart. There are a few common side structural changes to the heart muscle: at the cellular level, the sacromeres in the cells replicate and the alignment of muscle cells with respect to each other is abnormal.
