Rule for adding, multiplying and dividing in one equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lets say we have 2x = 10. I can multiply both sides by 2 to get 4x=20 or divide both sides by 2 to get x = 5. I can also add 2 to both sides to get 2x + 2 = 12. All three of these are equal. In summary, all addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division operations done on a single equation must be done to both sides of the equal sign.
