the area of a rectangular swimming pool is given by 5x^2-31x-28 ft. squared. One side length of the pool is given by 5x+4 ft. what is an algebraic expression for the other side length of the pool?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Do a long division of the area (5*x^2-31*x-28) by the width (5x+4) to get the length (x-7).

i know that i am supposed to do long division by i am not sure how to actually go through the steps of it

I would love to explain it on the blackboard. The next best is to post you a site which explains it in detail. Many such sites are available, it's just one of the firsts that pop up on a search. http://www.sosmath.com/algebra/factor/fac01/fac01.html
