i know how to program websites that is i am good at php, javascript and mysql but horrible at web design. My sites look horrible. Suggest me some software to make designs etc or what else should i learn ?

Hi,

Before diving into tutorials, it's really important to think about what you want out of your site - the user experience, the brand experience (the two should be closely related), the ultimate uses and how it fits into your long-term goals for that site or business.

The, you should to start to make a list of websites for which you like the design and how the user experience plus brand experience works or doesn't work for you. Be sure to establish a criteria for judging.

Then, look at the top trafficked sites and also see what is popular/standard benchmarks for your industry/type of site. I usually do this kind of analysis in a matrix because it helps me make sense of all the factors that are important.

From there, go to tutorials on the web about design plus blogs about good design. (I don't have a list handy but you've got me thinking and I will try to shoot some to you later). The foundation work helps in framing how you think about design which ultimately helps you to design.
