Why does space junk stay in orbit?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

may be because there is no atmosphere

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gravity acts as a centripetal force which keeps the junk in orbit around earth.

It stays in a decaying orbit. Gravity steadily pulls it down. Space junk will eventually burn up in the atmosphere in a few decades (depending on the velocity and altitude).
