Prokarytoes have only one chromosome. Explain why a mutation thus has a more significant effect.

you, my friend, have two copies from every chromosome (except the sex chromosome, I don't know about that...). that means you got each gene at least twice in your DNA. now, most of the time, the gene is silenced on one of your chromosomes. but if your other gene happens to mutate, the mutation will usually silence that gene. the other chromosome will now be "unmuted" and the gene can easily be re-expressed again. if you have only one copy of the gene, a mutation that turns off a gene will usually mean your death. but since procaryotes always come in great numbers, death is not such a biggie.
