Yes.  If you are in this situation, you have to know at least which are the metals and the non metals.  All the metals usually have names that end in -ium.  So knock out the first three.  That leaves all the nonmetallic ones.  Now you have to know which ones.  So if you know a bit about the periodic table, you know that Argon is a noble gas.  So there is one possibility.  You have to know that phosphorus, silicon and sulfur are solids.  That would leave Ar and Cl.  Now at least you have a 50/50 chance!  You have to study the periodic table and the periodic properties!
