Most likely the thing they're looking for here is Sherman's scorched earth campaign. He generally destroyed fields and more or less everything along the full length of the path from Atlanta to the sea, including burning down Atlanta itself (where OpenStudy is based! :p), which was a central hub of the southern railroads (and to some extent still is).
