Jen and Heather went to lunch. When the bill came Jen discovered that she had only 8.00 dollars, luckly Heather had enough money to pay the other part or 3/5 of the bill.
I answered this exact question for someone yesterday, were you here under another username?
can someone please help me with this one. No this is my first time on this site :)
OK. well, the entire bill is 5/5 (five fifths). If heather paid 3/5, then what part did Jen pay?
um im so lost lol
OK there are 5 parts of the bill total -- 5 fifths. Heather paid 3. So how many are left over for Jen to pay?
2? lol
yes... so what part of the bill is that expressed as a fraction?
2/5
right, so, we know now that Jen paid 2/5 of the bill, and 2/5 of the bill is $8. so, any ideas how to tell how much the entire bill is?
thank you so0o much ur a life saver :)
$10
no, how did you get $10?
lol gosh i added 8 & 2
ok... why?
not sure i just guessed im not very confident with fractions sorry
what grade are you in?
5th
ok. Do you know how to solve an equation, like "2x = 10"?
yes 5
okay so similarly let's call the total amount of the bill "X". we know that 2/5 of the bill is $8 so that means \[ { 2 \over 5 } x = 8 \] can you solve for x?
3/5
wait didnt mean to post that
i dont know....
what do you get when you multiply both sides by 5?
ok so i was able to figure that X =20...so heather then paid $12 dollars & Jen paid the $8 dollars......pheeww!! :) i would post how i got there but i got to finish the rest of my homework lol
Thanks again for the help :)
