Which compound sentence is equivalent to |x - 5| > 4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x-5>4 x>9 x-5<-4 x<1 x>9 or x<1

OpenStudy (ash2326):

x-5>4=> x>9 -x+5>4=>x<1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4<x-5<4 ==> -4+5<x-5+5<4+5 ==> 1<x<9

^^wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry got it in wrong way... thought was less than sign... so |x-5|>4 isnt it... When |x-5|= -(x-5)... [-ve] ==> -(x-5)>4 ==> x-5<-4 ==> x<1...Eqn[1] When |x-5|= (x-5) [+ve] ==> x-5>4 ==> x>4+5 ==> x>9...Eqn[2] Now, From Eqn [1] and [2] Compound solution is x<1 or x>9
