With?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve by completing the square and then use the square root method to solve. Write your answer in set brackets with no spaces, such as {-1,2}. x2 - 4x - 32 = 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add 32 to both sides... x2 - 4x = 32 complete the square (x2 - 4x) take 1/2 of b, so 1/2 of -4 = -2 square this = 4 add 4 to both sides x2 - 4x + 4 = 32 + 4 (x-2)(x-2)=36

OpenStudy (anonymous):

square root of both sides... x-2 = +/- 6 so x-2=6 and x-2=-6 x=4 and x=-8

So what x and whats y ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can help you with the first part... completing the square: 1) take the constant term to the other side so that your equation becomes \[x ^{2} -4x = 32\] 2) now completing the square... take the coefficient of x...which is -4 , divide it by 2 which gives you -2 and square it... which gives you 4...add this 4 to both sides of the equation which then gives you \[x ^{2}-4x+4 = 32 + 4\] 3) now the brackets part... take the coefficient of the x term (-4) and divide it by 2 = -2 your perfect square becomes : \[(x-2)^{2} = 36\] 4) now just solve algebraically... (x-2) = \[\pm6\] therefore \[x = 2 \pm 6\] so x is 2 + 6 = 8 or x is 2-6 = -4

its a quad equation...there is no y...only 2 values for x :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ooo :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@csc2iffy...just recheck you answers...because i got 8 and -4...whereas you got -8 and 4 not sure...

sorry youre right
