OpenStudy (sasogeek):

my math teacher said if we can master calculus, we can do any type of math... how true is that statement?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I go a step further. Someone who did Calculus can do anything in life. :)

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

that's a serious statement!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Calculus is a vast Branch of Mathematical Sciences, it overlaps a lot of fields, both theoretical and practical. It'd really help a lot bring out the real potential. When You go for Calculus, you go for real mathematics and sciences.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Intellectually I mean! :-) Of course, it won't help you become a mountain climber.

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

LOL

OpenStudy (jamesj):

That's somewhat true. What is emphatically true is that if you never master calculus, you cannot go further in mathematics, science, engineering, 'rigorous' social science (such as serious economics), etc. So I would say being able to or having mastered calculus is necessary condition to proceed in a lot of fields, but not a sufficient one.

OpenStudy (zarkon):

I've known a few people (2 to be exact) that were really good at calculus , but failed out of graduate school

OpenStudy (zarkon):

I guess that is a couple of people :)

OpenStudy (zarkon):

I had a friend that didn't do well in calculus..he now has a phd in math (algebra). [he is much better at calculus now ;) ]
