x(x+6) = 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that enough?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that the answer? Cuzz it dosnt look right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No it is a hint . Solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know how to solve quadratics? The trick is: Let width = x then length = x+6 Area = width * length = x(x+6) = 10 therefore x^2 + 6x -10 = 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Therefore x is either 1.36 or -7.36 the width cant be negative. So the answer is 1.36

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so L=-7.36 & W=1.36?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

L can't be negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or, W can't be negative. You need to pick the positive root of that quadratic. So, W is 1.36. Remember, L is 6 more than W (L = W + 6). So, L equals 1.36+6.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so L=7.36 & W=1.36?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. But, is is not 7.36 because of the roots of that equation. It is just a coincidence. It is 7.36 because the problem statement says Length is 6 less than Width.
