The amount of pollution in the air(measured in parts per million or ppm) around an oil refinery is given by the expression a/d^2, where a is the amount of pollution produced by the refinery and d is the distance from the refinery in miles. Suppose a couple must live somewhere between two cities that each have an oil refinery. Suppose the oil refineries are 20 miles apart and the one in city A produces 8 times the amount of pollution as the refinery in city B produces.
