The lengths of the sides of a triangle are 3x, 5x – 12, and x + 20. Find the value of x so that the triangle is isosceles.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=10.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're really smart ahaha. Thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and glad to help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do I show work for that..? Hahah Like how did you do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think there are actually 3 values for x that work

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isosceles triangles have 2 sides the same length, so set any 2 sides equal to each other and solve for X.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I solved \( 3x = x+20 \)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thankss :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait but doesn't x have to be just two different answers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no you get 3 i believe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

moneybird you got the first one wrong, it's 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x = 32 x = 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x can be equal to 8, 10, or 6
