Mathematics 8 Online
OpenStudy (anonymous):

A triangle has vertices at coordinates (11,1) , (2,3) and (3,2) . What is the number of units in the length of the longest side of the triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Isn't it sqrt(85) ?

hero (hero):

Didn't you post this one already?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it isnt \sqrt{85}

hero (hero):

That's what I get sqrt{85}, but you can approximate it to 9.22

hero (hero):

How do you know it isn't sqrt{85} ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im doing an online math workbook

hero (hero):

Did the instructions say to approximate the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, it just said what i wrote in the problem above.

hero (hero):

How do you know sqrt{85} is incorrect?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the workbook said it was incorrect and gave me the problem again

hero (hero):

Try 9.22

hero (hero):

It should have stated how it wants the answer to be inputted

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it says the answer was 10

hero (hero):

strange

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they round it to the nearest whole number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope.

hero (hero):

9 would be the nearest whole number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to the nearest tens number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the distance between 3,7 and 11,1 is \sqrt{100}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3,7 ?

hero (hero):

3,7 wasn't one of the points you originally posted

hero (hero):

You posted 2,3, 3,2 and 11,1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats the problem, the REAL problem didnt ask for 3,7

hero (hero):

so computer mistake then

hero (hero):

Dont' worry about that. There's nothing you could have done

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok! thanks guys!

hero (hero):

Actually, I take that back. The computer didn't make the mistake. The mistake was ultimately the result of human error. Whoever created the problem made the mistake

hero (hero):

Computers don't make mistakes. Only humans do.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol, good point.
