Cells can do a number of things when they reach their size limits: they can stop growing, they can actually shrink and they can divide...

There is no "better" when talking about cells. Smaller cells have a greater surface area to volume ratio than larger cells. For some cells, that's good. For other types of cells, that's not so good.
