Do you find one OS better than another for running Python in order to do the assignments? I'm running it on an VM and have options.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Python is pretty damn portable, so you shouldn't have a problem with any choice whatsoever. About development environment, I personally like Unix-based systems. That said, if you are only coding for the assignments, you should just pick what you are more comfortable with.

I would agree with bmp, use what you're comfortable, however i would definitely get familiar with unix based OSs if you haven't already.

I have little Unix experience, though I have used Linux installs for a while, what is a good Unix OS for someone just starting to work in it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mac OS is unix based. I started with Ubuntu Linux and then moved onto Backtrack Linux, which is a penetration testing distribution. If I were you, I would start with Ubuntu or Mac OS as they are very user friendly.

Ahh gotcha, I have a few Ubuntu Virtual Machines, that is what was going to use. Unfortunately MacOS does not play well with Hyper-V.

Other options are Linux Mint, Fedora, and Debian. These (together with Ubuntu) are generally more user friendly than other Linux distros, at least IMO. Then you can move on to something more of your taste. I really like Archie, for instance :-)
