I am writing a paper that discusses school years such as the 2010/2011 school year. My professor told me that the / was not allowed. How should I write that in APA?

Most styles don't permit symbols like that. You can check out their style guide here: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ I doubt they'll specify what you can use in lieu of "/" however. Why not just trying writing it out? Use "And" or "or"
